Compare porta potty types and sizes side by side
Five porta potty types cover almost every Richmond rental. The standard unit handles most jobsites and parties. A flushing unit adds a sink for weddings. An accessible unit serves public events. A hand wash station serves food areas. A restroom trailer suits formal events with power nearby.
| Unit | Best for | Inside | Needs from you | Footprint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard porta potty | Jobsites, backyard parties, farms, church events | Seat, urinal, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, vent, locking door | A level spot the truck can reach | About 4 × 4 ft, 7.5 ft tall |
| Flushing unit with sink | Weddings, showers, graduation parties | Foot-pump flush, sink with soap, paper towels, mirror | Nothing extra; water tank is built in | About 4 × 4.5 ft |
| Wheelchair-accessible unit | Public events, parks, guests who use a wheelchair or walker | Ground-level entry, grab bars, room to turn a wheelchair | A flat, firm path to the door | About 7.5 × 7.5 ft |
| Hand wash station | Food service, crews, any event with 2 or more toilets | 2 or 4 sinks, foot pumps, soap, paper towels | Nothing extra | About 3 × 3 ft |
| Restroom trailer | Weddings, formal events, long VIP events | Flushing toilets, real sinks, lights, climate control | Level ground, a garden hose and a standard outlet (or we bring a generator) | 2-stall about 8 × 16 ft |
What is inside a standard porta potty?
A standard porta potty has a toilet seat over a 60-gallon holding tank, a urinal, a toilet paper holder, a hand sanitizer dispenser, a roof vent and a door that locks from inside. A standard unit has no sink and no light. The tank holds about 200 to 250 uses before service.
| Outside size | About 44 in wide × 48 in deep × 90 in tall |
|---|---|
| Weight empty | About 150–200 lb |
| Door opening | About 24 in wide |
| Holding tank | About 60 gallons |
| Inside | Seat, urinal, paper, hand sanitizer, vent, mirror on most units |
| Uses before service | About 200–250 |

When is each unit the wrong choice?
A restroom trailer is wrong for a muddy or sloped field with no level 25-foot spot. An accessible unit is wrong for a backyard reached only through a narrow gate. A standard unit is wrong for a formal evening reception. A hand wash station is wrong in a hard freeze.
- Trailer: needs level ground, a hose and an outlet, or a generator we supply.
- Accessible: needs a flat, firm path. Gravel and thick grass are hard on wheelchairs.
- Hand wash: water lines freeze below 32°F. Use sanitizer in winter.
Unit questions
Will a porta potty fit through my backyard gate?
A standard porta potty is about 44 inches wide, so it needs a gate opening of at least 48 inches plus room for two people to walk it on a dolly. An accessible unit is about 7.5 feet wide and will not fit through a normal gate.
Do standard units have a light inside?
Standard units have a translucent roof that lets in daylight but no light. Add a battery puck light for evening events. Restroom trailers have built-in lights.
Is a sink unit cheaper than a toilet plus a hand wash station?
A unit with a built-in sink usually costs about the same as, or less than, a standard unit plus a separate station. A separate station is better when many people only need to wash hands, such as at a food stand.
Can I see photos of the exact unit before I book?
Photos of standard, sink and flushing units can be texted on request. The photos on this site show our real units.
Do you rent shower trailers?
Shower trailers are a separate specialty rental with about a week of lead time. Ask on the call and we will tell you what is open for your dates.
