How many accessible porta potties does an event need?
An event needs at least 5% of the porta potties in each cluster to be wheelchair accessible, and never fewer than 1. That rule comes from the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2. A cluster of 10 units needs 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 25 needs 2.

What makes a unit wheelchair accessible?
A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a floor at ground level or a low ramp, a wide door, grab bars beside the seat and enough floor space for a 60-inch turning circle. The unit is about 7.5 feet square, so it needs more room than a standard unit.
| Outside size | About 89 in wide × 89 in deep × 92 in tall |
|---|---|
| Door opening | About 36 in |
| Inside | Grab bars, seat, paper, sanitizer; 60-in turning space |
| Entry | Ground-level floor or low ramp |
| Sink | None inside; pair with a hand wash station |
Where should an accessible unit go?
Place an accessible porta potty on the flattest, firmest ground at the event, on the shortest route from parking and seating. Avoid thick grass, loose gravel and slopes. Keep a clear 5-foot space in front of the door so a wheelchair can turn and enter.
Wheelchair-Accessible Porta Potty Rental in Richmond: questions before you book
Is ADA-compliant the same as wheelchair accessible?
Compliance depends on the full setup, including the route and placement, not just the unit. We describe our units as wheelchair accessible and give the model so your planner can confirm it meets your requirement.
Does the accessible unit have a sink?
The turning space leaves no room for a sink. Pair the unit with a hand wash station placed on the same flat ground.
Do I need one for a private backyard party?
Private parties have no ADA count rule. Hosts often add one for older guests, guests with walkers, and parents with small children.
Are accessible units always available?
Accessible units are limited and book quickly on summer and game weekends. Reserve them when you book your standard units.
