How many porta potties for an event?
Plan 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests at an event of 4 hours or less. Over 4 hours, add 1 unit per 250 guests. With alcohol, add 1 more per 250 guests. A 150-guest, 5-hour wedding with a bar needs 5 units: 3 base, plus 1 for length, plus 1 for alcohol.
| Guests | Up to 4 hours | Over 4 hours | Over 4 hours with alcohol | Hand wash stations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 1 |
| 150 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 2 |
| 200 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 2 |
| 300 | 6 | 8 | 10 | 3 |
| 500 | 10 | 12 | 14 | 4 |
| 1,000 | 20 | 24 | 28 | 7 |
Our planning method: 1 unit per 50 guests, round up. Over 4 hours, add 1 unit per 250 guests (round up). Alcohol, add 1 more per 250 guests. Hand wash: 1 per 4 toilets. At least 5% accessible per cluster (2010 ADA Standards 213.2). This is our recommendation, not a legal rule.
How many toilets does OSHA require on a jobsite?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer construction workers. For 20 or more workers, the rule is 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. For 200 or more workers, it is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. A standard unit counts as 1 seat and 1 urinal.
Our comfort plan is about 10 workers per unit on a 40-hour week with weekly service. A crew of 25 meets the legal minimum with 1 unit, but 3 units keep lines and odor down. Source: OSHA 1926.51.
When should I round up?
Round up from the chart when the event has a bar, a hot July or August afternoon, many children, a mostly female crowd, or only one restroom cluster far from seating. Add 1 unit for each condition that applies. Short lines keep guests at the party instead of at the door.
Worked example: a 200-guest July reunion, 6 hours, no alcohol, lots of kids. Chart says 5 units. Add 1 for heat and 1 for children. Rent 7 units and 2 hand wash stations.
Sizing questions
How many porta potties for 100 people?
Two standard units cover 100 guests for up to 4 hours. Make it 3 if the event runs longer, and 4 if it runs longer and alcohol is served.
How many porta potties for a 5K or race?
Races need units at the start, where nearly every runner goes in the 30 minutes before the gun. Plan 1 unit per 50 to 75 runners at the start line and 1 or 2 at the finish.
Do I need separate units for men and women?
Many hosts label one unit for men and one for women at 75 guests or more. It shortens the line for women, who spend longer per visit.
How many people can use one porta potty before it fills?
A standard 60-gallon tank handles about 200 to 250 uses. At a 4-hour event with 50 guests, that leaves plenty of room. Multi-day events need a service visit between days.
How many porta potties for a farm crew?
When 11 or more workers do hand labor in the field on a day, OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110 requires 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility per 20 field workers, within a quarter-mile walk.
